Neoclassical architecture emerged in the mid 18th century as a reaction to Rococo. Derived from Palladian architecture, it has references to classical Greek and Roman architecture. Unlike Rococo, neoclassical architecture has a flat, planar quality, emphasising the wall and the separation of elements. Notable examples of neoclassical architecture include the White House in Washington and the Bank of England in London.
