About the architect
Charles Vander Straeten, also Karel van der Straaten (Brussels, 1771 – Ixelles, 1834) was court architect under King William I of the Netherlands. His neoclassical buildings are mainly located in his native Brussels, but he was also active elsewhere (The Hague, Leuven, Brasschaat). Vander Straeten’s most striking design was undoubtedly the Lion of Waterloo.
